I used to struggle too

but I had no idea why and so couldn’t find any solutions that helped me or gave me the relief I sought.

I felt completely alone in life. Exhausted. Fed up. Empty.

It felt like I was constantly running around after everyone else, trying to please them, keeping the peace, avoiding conflict just to end up with bigger problems and feeling even worse not just within myself but also about myself.

I didn’t really like myself very much and so didn’t take very good care of myself. I had no idea how to value myself or that, in fact, that was even a thing! My self-esteem was non-existent.

The people I chose to be in relationships with mirrored that back and so I constantly felt unwanted, unsupported and unloved. I was emotionally neglected and disrespected on so many levels but felt unable to change that.

I knew that I should set boundaries but it just felt too awkward and uncomfortable. Besides, I had no clue what these boundaries even were! Or whether I had ‘permission’ to set them.

Was I right to want what I want? Was I right not to want what I didn’t want? It was all just too confusing and I didn’t have the energy for yet another internal dialogue that led nowhere. Indecision was a constant companion. It felt hopeless. I felt hopeless.

But then I had a realisation!

After years of trying to figure out where I was going wrong, I decided to learn about how to create healthy relationships (and it wasn’t through codependency!).

And then it hit me. All the things we are meant to do to establish a loving bond with another person also apply to us. They apply to the relationship we have with ourselves (Wait! What? That’s a thing!? … Yes. It most certainly is. Mindblowing, right?).

We need to be emotionally connected to ourselves before we can connect to others in deep and meaningful ways.

Without that, we simply cannot have the relationships we want. It is impossible. I decided to do what it takes for me to get the love I needed and the relationship I wanted.

That included learning how to connect to myself which means that I now know how to feel my feelings without struggle, know what I want or need and feel comfortable in making that happen.
